Tracings

Tracings are an ongoing recording of the walls and surfaces that surround the artist. Often being collaborative events that include other inhabitants or visitors, these tracings are a communal denial to inevitable gentrification.

The move away from Beck’s usual lens based medium and into direct mark making creates a new field of recording but one that is not so different. The focus on documenting rather than gestural marks, functions more within a photographic framework rather than the pictorial.

These to scale recordings create intimate detailed readings. Sizes of each recording vary from small cracks in plaster to entire stretches of wall. The paper used functions as an architectural death mask, the increasing multitude of which aims to contruct an architectural space out of traces. In this state a new potential is found where the trace of a structure becomes a structure in its own right.
